During an intensive 10–day long education programme, the MAD International Summer School of Design tested design theories and hypothesis in practice. Students in a dialogue with teachers and masters created new objects, problem solutions and experiences, exploring the topic of «Biomimicry».

Four international work groups of students, professionals and teachers looked for solutions to the ecological and sustainability problems that are connected to nutrition. Design conceptions investigated the human processes related to food — growth and cultivation, gathering and harvesting, transportation and preservation, and finally the art of food consumption.

Animals, plants and microbes are the inspiration of the solutions and objects created during the summer school by merging science, craftsmanship, design and nature observations. The examples, models and strategies found in nature are a response to the global problems caused by human activity.

The works created during the International Summer School of Design will be exhibited in the wooden manor of Sigulda castle complex from September 21 to October 21. The exhibition hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 11.00 to 17.00, with free admission. More information on the tutors, students and programme of the summer school can be found on its webpage.
