Nikola Freimane’s qualification work upon graduating from the Product Design programme at Riga School of Design and Art (RSDA) is an accessory collection called Vēlreiz (Again). It consists of various elements that are interchangeable, adapting to the user’s needs and preferences. The modular collection was created with not only functionality in mind but also the longevity of the accessories, allowing the user to constantly create new ways to complement their image.

Author of the accessories, Nikola Freimane, points out that the collection was created with the idea of change, sustainability, and functionality: «This work is an attempt to create a design that lives with its wearer — one that is able to change and does not lose its value. These accessories are not tied to a single trend but call for a conscious attitude towards things, materials, and oneself.»

The collection is based on a functional approach. It includes bags, belts, and pockets of various sizes that can be mixed and matched to suit the individual needs and daily routine of the user. «These accessories are not just a visual addition to clothing — they are designed as practical everyday companions, intended for long-term use,» says Nikola. At the same time, their adaptability allows you to complement your look without having to buy a completely new accessory. «Each user is given the opportunity to create and change their look, highlighting or concealing details at their own will.»

Sustainability is also the basis for the selection of materials for the collection. The young designer explains that she wanted to use the collection to give value to things that would otherwise be considered useless. That’s why she created material from recycled paper for the pockets during the creation of the collection. This not only embodies a circular approach but also gives the accessory collection a visual and tactile accent.

The collection was created in close collaboration with Nikola’s twin sister, Lerika Freimane, who studied fashion design at RSDA. The accessories complement Lerika’s clothing collection Pašcīņa (Self-Struggle), which tells the story of alienation. «Our joint work allowed us to create a harmonious and thoughtful collection, forming a unified story both aesthetically and conceptually,» says Nikola.

About RSDA Product Design programme

This year, 58 product design students graduated from RSDA after completing the new modular programme. Now, each student learns not only how to work with specific materials, as has been the practice previously, but also becomes familiar with various materials and technologies most commonly used in product design, acquiring skills and creating works in nine school workshops: wood, metal, ceramics, glass, composite materials, 3D printing, new materials, jewellery, and fashion accessories sewing classes. «Developing a new product requires knowledge not of one specific material or technology but of a solution to a current situation or problem, where the material is only a means of expression to materialise a specific idea,» emphasises Baiba Lindāne, head of the Product Design programme at RSDA.

The four-year programme is developed to give young students an understanding of the design development and product creation process, as well as work in the industry, including collaboration with clients. During the third year, students develop designs and implement products in collaboration with entrepreneurs, as well as state and municipal institutions. This gives an opportunity not only to create designs for a specific client but also to learn the communication skills needed when working on a project and to learn more about various industries.
