Until January 11, the Kim? Contemporary Art Center is hosting fashion designer Sabīne Skarule’s exhibition Traces, created in collaboration with photographer Sarah Blais and stylist Monika Tatalovic. The exhibition is based on reflections on belonging and the traces left by our individual experiences and collective memories in today’s changing cultural landscape. The designer also explores these themes in her brand Skarule’s clothing collections, which have earned international recognition. In the Nice Touch section, Sabīne shares a few tricks for overcoming anxiety in stressful moments.

Nice Touch Editorial December 12, 2025

«When I feel stressed while doing something important, I tend to use two old but reliable tricks. When the content is serious, I find slightly absurd thinking helpful. For example, if I feel extremely nervous when speaking in front of an audience, I imagine that all the listeners are naked. This takes away my fear and activates my sense of play. And if I can’t bring myself to make an important phone call, I press the «call» button before I have time to think about it — by throwing myself into the situation, stress turns into action.»

Fashion designer Sabīne Skarule creates contemporary and sustainable clothing that slowly follows global fashion trends while remaining rooted in Latvian traditional crafts, culture, and nature. Handicrafts created in collaboration with local weavers, knitters, and crocheters play an important role in Skarule collections, passing on their knowledge and values to younger generations. The designer graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, Belgium, and furthered her professional skills at The Row fashion house in New York. In 2020, Sabīne’s collection, +371, received the prestigious H&M Design Award 2020. Read about Skarule’s latest collection here. We have also previously written about the 2023 and 2024 collections, as well as the Daythief collection.

Sabīne’s exhibition Traces at the Kim? Contemporary Art Center was created in collaboration with her creative partners — photographer Sarah Blais and stylist Monika Tatalovic — and is the result of several years of collaboration and sustained dialogue, providing an overview of the material and visual world of Skarule while also shedding light on a process that usually remains hidden — how the work is made, what voices are involved, and what is the role of each individual woman. The exhibition is complemented by installations by artist Haleimah Darwish, as well as the Skarule catalogue, created by the design studio Vrints–Kolsteren, and an improvised Skarule clothing and accessories sales stand.

Tomorrow, December 13, at 12:00, Skarule’s first showroom in Riga will open at Berga Bazārs (Marijas iela 13–k7). Everyone is welcome to attend the celebration, which Sabīne is hosting in collaboration with the architecture studio Ēter and the floral design studio Inbloom.
