The Liepaja Residency and Culture Centre has just become an official partner of the New European Bauhaus (NEB). The creative platform is led by designer Barbara Freiberga, who, in addition to running her own studio, is actively involved in the work of design and creative industry organisations. She is convinced that cooperation with NEB will open up new opportunities and promote Liepāja as a creative and innovative city. In the Nice Touch section, Barbara talks about an artistic and technological experience in Liepāja.

Nice Touch Editorial July 18, 2025

«Have you ever listened to how a building sounds? At the Liepāja concert hall, The Great Amber, you can actually hear it. When ascending to the upper floors, attentive visitors will notice small sensors on the building’s windows — they capture the vibrations of the building itself and convert them into sound. These are not just technical measurements but an opportunity to listen to the very soul of the building. Listening to these sounds, one gets the feeling that the building breathes, feels and lives along with the music and each of us! The amber-coloured glass soul of The Great Amber resonates and vibrates along with the world.»

Barbara Freiberga is the lead designer at Barbara Freiberga Design Studio, located in the heart of Liepāja. She is also involved in the Latvian Designers’ Society and numerous design and cultural councils. She has led the Latvian Design Award, created several contemporary design exhibitions in Latvia, and has received recognition several times in the competition Women in Architecture, Construction, and Design. Barbara currently calls Liepāja her home — a city that is eagerly preparing for its status as European Capital of Culture in 2027. Here she works with the Liepāja Residency and Culture Centre and the Latvian Creative Residencies Association.

The Liepāja Residency and Culture Centre operates as a creative platform that organises in-person and online artist residencies, community engagement projects, educational initiatives, and interdisciplinary collaborations. In the coming years, the centre plans to continue developing international residencies, neighbourhood development projects, and creative laboratories for communities.
