There are things, services, places, work tools and software that we choose to use because a small but important nuance makes them stand out. This time, brothers Andrejs and Ernests Kļaviņš, who founded the game studio Color Gray, talk about the engine they used to create their debut game, The Case of the Golden Idol, which was ranked among the best games of 2022. Recently, it also won the Independent Game Festival Award for Design Excellence.

Nice Touch Editorial May 12, 2023

«When we started making The Case of the Golden Idol, we only had hobby-level programming experience, so we wanted to choose a beginner-friendly technical platform for game development. Most independent games are built on the Unity engine, but we decided to try Godot because it’s completely free and open source. Godot’s philosophy of how game elements are constructed and combined makes this engine easier to understand for beginners. At the same time, it is richer and more complex than other similar solutions such as Construct or Game Maker Studio. In addition, there are many educational materials and detailed documentation available for Godot, which helped us to learn how to use it.»
