It’s that time of year when many design competitions throughout the world have announced their calls for entries. One of the most sought–after quality marks for excellent design is the «Red Dot Award», organised by the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen. Entries are now open to some of its disciplines.

Stories Editorial January 26, 2017

The «Red Dot Award» is divided into three disciplines: Product Design, Communication Design and Design Concept. In addition, the exhibitors at the prestige furniture and interior design fair «interzum 2017» will have their work evaluated separately. Product designers and manufacturers, as well as authors of yet unimplemented ideas from around the world can apply to enter the competition now, but the discipline of Communication Design, in which the Latvian design office «H2E» won last year, will be open for entries from February 27.

Product Design

Designers and manufacturers can submit their current products for evaluation in the international competition only until February 8. There are 47 categories to choose from that reflect the wide range of industrially produced goods. Under the motto «In search of good design and innovation», the experts on the roughly 40–member jury will award the «Red Dot» seal only to products that are convincing in terms of their good design quality.

The experts recognise particularly well-executed aspects of design work with an Honourable Mention, while the best products in each category receive a Red Dot: Best of the Best. The competition winners will be officially announced at the awards ceremony on July 3, 2017 in Essen, Germany. The winners’ exhibition «Design on Stage» will take place in the Red Dot Design Museum in Essen from July 4 to August 6. One can register for the competition on the «Red Dot» webpage, but the actual works must be delivered for the jury by February 10.

Design Concept

The Red Dot Award: Design Concept has been organised in Singapore every year since 2005. Up–and–coming talents, designers, design companies and universities from all over the world have the opportunity to enter their design visions into this competition and put their whole creative potential to the test; with prestige and image boosting projects they can demonstrate their innovative power. Winning an award in this competition is a proof that creative minds have a vision and can commit, carry out, research and experiment — and that they have a name to watch out for in the future. In 2016, 4698 entries from 60 countries were submitted in this discipline. Until January 31 participants can benefit from the conditions of the early registration, while the last date to register is May 24.

Communication Design

The Red Dot Award: Communion Design is geared towards all creative minds from agencies, design offices and companies with strong communication campaigns as well as renowned designers, new talents, and freelancers. Every year, the latest records are selected out of typographies, posters, books, graphics, apps, games, websites and many other projects. The top prize in this discipline is the Grand Prix for the best piece of work in each category. In addition, the Red Dot: Junior Prize with the prize money of 10 000 euros is awarded to the best work of an apprentice, a student or young professional. Also, the honorary titles Red Dot: Agency of the Year and Red Dot: Brand of the Year are awarded. This year the registration is open from February 27 to June 9.

The participation fees for all disciplines change depending on the submission date. More information on the registration, competition rules and previous winners can be found on the «Red Dot Award» webpage.
