The exhibition Ogres rītausma (Dawn of Ogre) is on display at the Ogre History and Art Museum until October 10, curated and designed by architect Zigmārs Jauja. In the section Nice Touch, Zigmārs shares his inspiration for both the work of an architect and a designer.
«An experimental, set-designer-created performance in a small, independent theater is an absolutely nice touch! They are not made that often, but when they are, they usually blow me away. Positively. I see freshness there in the use of different materials, composition, transformation of space, and lighting. Such an experience opens the mind to new searches in interior design, architecture, and also in exhibition creation. This is especially useful when working with exhibitions, which are in a way a still frame (or frozen moment) from a theater performance, allowing the viewer to walk around the stage and be a part of the performance.
If someone asked me for evidence, I would say that a vivid example is Reinis Sukhanovs’s Pieņemt savu nevarību (Dirty Deal Teatro). Oh, those construction insulation foam membrane backdrops that dazzle the fascinated viewer of the performance with a bright orange glow. I love independent theaters!»

Zigmārs Jauja is an architect at the office NRJA, where he has worked on the reconstruction of the Riga Circus, the Coal House and the reconstruction of the Tobacco Factory, which was among the finalists for the Latvian Architecture Award this year. In parallel with his work at NRJA, Zigmārs searches for and finds evidence of the past and compiles them in the project Hidden Riga, has co-authored the book Zudušos kinoteātrus meklējot (In Search of Lost Cinemas), participated in three Venice Architecture Biennales, and curated the pop-up exhibition gallery MAD telpa.
