Black smoke clouds suddenly overwhelm a city, spreading depression and stealing all colours and smells. A brave dog decides to withstand the sadness and sets up stairs to heaven. It turns out, the clouds are full of sad, sad sadness but the dog can help them by playing the harmonica.

The poetic story by Rūta Briede reflects on how emotions affect our view of the world and reveal that one can overcome sadness by not avoiding it. The witty illustrations by Elīna Brasliņa allow the reader to almost physically feel the weight of depression and the relief that follows when it’s gone.

The publishers, «Liels un mazs», explain that the inner dialogue with one’s emotions is there at any age. Therefore, the book is both for children and adults. The story also makes one think about the side effects of life in a big city — rush, dullness, indifference.

This is the first book in which the tutor at the Art Academy of Latvia Rūta Briede collaborates with her illustration class student Elīna Brasliņa who is one of the most well–known illustrators of the new generation. Both authors received the International Baltic Sea Region Jānis Baltvilks Prize in 2017.

The book «Suns, kurš atrada skumjas» will soon be released in Korea, China and Taiwan.
